Researchers of the Centre for Applied Social Sciences of the University of Tartu have conducted a survey to analyse how the university as an organisation responded to the crisis, and to what extent it is possible to use the gained experience to plan future work.

Research groups of the University of Tartu led by Professor of Mathematical Statistics Krista Fischer and Professor of Bioinformatics Jaak Vilo who have supported the state with the data collection and analysis since the beginning of the corona crisis can continue their work thanks to a private donation by entrepreneur Väino Kaldoja.

In a live interview on Tuesday, 1 September at 13:00, Rector of the University of Tartu Toomas Asser spoke about the organisation of studies and work at the university this autumn. The graduation ceremonies of the University of Tartu are held from 15 to 20 June. All ceremonies are held in an online environment, meaning that all who wish can participate. Online graduation ceremonies can be watched live in UTTV at the announced time. Links to recordings will be added to the table below after each ceremony. This year, traditional graduation ceremonies bringing together hundreds of people are not held at the University of Tartu, but ceremonies take place online. The university also makes a gift to the graduates: they now have their own tree and a bench in Tartu city centre. Also, the university main building and the sculpture on the Town Hall Square will be decorated.

The University of Tartu Senate granted Richard Kerner, emeritus professor of Sorbonne Université, an honorary doctorate in mathematical physics.

Tiina Kraav, Lecturer in Mathematics Education, and Kaur Lumiste, Lecturer of Mathematical Statistics, were awarded with good teaching grants. The aim of the grant is to support lecturers in developing different teaching practices, analysing them systematically and in distributing the results. The awardees were chosen considering their current contribution in educational development and the prospective results of their educational research.

The opening ceremony of the academic year 2014/2015 of the University of Tartu takes place on Monday, 1 September at 10.00 at the assembly hall of the university (Ülikooli 18). The results of a study conducted by the University of Tartu on the prevalence of the coronavirus were presented to the Government Committee responsible for the emergency situation today. The results from the second week of the study continue to confirm the low prevalence of the virus in Estonia.

Admissions to the University of Tartu take place based on the schedule announced in winter. According to current plans, admission requirements will remain largely unchanged. The application period to Estonian-taught master’s programmes runs until 1 July. From 18 June to 1 July, applications are accepted to bachelor’s, professional higher education and integrated curricula, and from 1 May to 15 June, to doctoral programmes.

Teaching and studies at the university continue in online environments until the end of semester. To minimise the movement of students, we ask that all exams and pass/fail assessments be conducted online. On April 23 the researchers of the University of Tartu began with a cross-sectional study on the prevalence of Covid-19 in Estonia. The team of researchers includes experts from the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics.
