Students of UT did well at the International Mathematics Competition

The International Mathematics Competition for University Students (IMC) took place from July 26 to 27 and students of UT also took part in it.

Due to the current COVID-19 situation and travelling restrictions, IMC was held online this year. The tasks were solved during a specific time frame at the Delta Centre, then scanned and sent to the jury for evaluation. On both days the contestants had four hours to solve four mathematical problems (á 10 points, 80 points in total) from the fields of Algebra, Analysis (Real and Complex), Geometry and Combinatorics. The contest was held for the 27th time and was coordinated by Professor John Jayne of the University College London. Because of the competition being held online, 546 people took part in it, which is more than usual (there were only 360 participants in 2019).

The University of Tartu team consisted of eight students:

  • Tähvend Uustalu (Mathematics BSc alumni) - 30 points - 1st prize
  • Oliver Nisumaa (Mathematics BSc, 3rd year) - 20 points - 3rd prize
  • Nikita Leo (Mathematics BSc, 2nd year) - 19 points - 3rd prize
  • Urmas Luhaäär (Mathematics BSc, 1st year) - 17 points - 3rd prize
  • Jaagup Kirme (Mathematics and Statistics MSc, 1st year) - 7 points - honourable mention
  • Martin Puškin (Mathematics BSc, 1st year) - 7 points - honourable mention
  • Karolina Tammemaa (Mathematics BSc alumni) - 7 points - honourable mention
  • Jaan Kristjan Kaasik (Mathematics BSc alumni) - 5 points - honourable mention

Receiving the first prize is an outstanding achievement for our students - this is the ninth time it has happened (UT has participated in IMC since 1996).

The UT team was supervised by Indrek Zolk and supported by the Estonian Mathematical Society.

The problems, solutions and results (individually and by teams) of the competition can be found from IMC-s official website. The opening and closing ceremonies can be seen from their Youtube channel. Materials of other mathematics competitions of the recent years can be found here.
